OBJECTIVES

MONTIS – Nature Conservation Association is an environmental non-governmental organisation (ENGO), which is non -profit and has a national scope. MONTIS was founded on the 23th of March 2014 and is based in Vouzela, a district of Viseu. The association focuses on the management of properties.

MARGINAL PROPERTIES

MONTIS believes in the management of marginal properties which are abandoned. In order to so, we acquire properties, and manage them in such a way as to increase biodiversity, seeking to ensure the sustainability of both the properties owned by MONTIS and by others.

MOTIVATION

The goal of nature conservation is to safeguard resources which do not always equate to an increase in market value. For this same reason, MONTIS manages properties which may not always yield sufficient income to cover their costs. These circumstances may appear when regular citizens mobilise resources derived from other activities to ensure their conservation, or when the state entirely takes on this task, or when more profitable, financially rational decisions are taken to the detriment of these property resources.

For those people that join the organisation, MONTIS guarantees that their membership fees will be directly devoted to the purchase of these abandoned/damaged properties. Associates will have the opportunity to visit properties managed mainly for natural conservation purposes, to become aware of environmental issues, and to come into contact with landscapes, flora, and fauna which are rarely accessible in a different context.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

The philosophy of MONTIS is evident in the purchase of properties, and insofar as possible, the increase of market value from natural resources. It ensures the long-term continuity conservation of natural resources found therein, by involving the local communities. The efforts of the association are evident in the emphasis placed on transparency, the communication of outcomes, and demonstrating results through property visits, thereby inspiring trust in its associates and involved participants.
